Chieftain Brand Meats began as the Kiowa Locker in 1970 and has been family owned and operated through its entire history. We offer a full line of inspected products: fresh, cooked and shelf stable which include:

Fresh (aged choice) Ribeyes, T-Bones, Kansas City Strips, Boneless Sirloins.

Fully Cooked bone-in hams that are hand-trimmed Maple Sugar Cured and Hickory Smoked without added water, Beef Summer Sausage, Smoked Sausage and Hotlinks.

Shelf Stable Spicy Beef Sticks, Smoked Sausage Sticks, Spicy Pepperoni Sticks and Beef Jerky.

The production of hams, bacon and sausages and the manufacture of snack sticks and jerky came about through necessity, as the population of Kiowa is approximately 1,200 people and shrinking due to the farm economy. Barber County, in which Kiowa is located, only has a total population of 5,300. The county cattle population is 65,000 (which definitely makes us a minority). However this large cattle base allows us access to the raw material, beef, which we need to produce a full line of quality meat products. Try as we will, we still have not been able to increase the population of people or decrease the cattle numbers. It's the economy, stupid!

From July 1998 and into 1999 we completely remodeled the plant and replaced our built-in gas fired smokehouse with two larger computerized electric smokehouses. We also added a VeMag to produce more ground products at precise weight. The VeMag computes and measures product weight and is accurate to within 1 gram. We also purchased a double chambered vacuum machine used to package many of our products. Only one-fourth of the plant is not refrigerated, that being the kill floor and cook room. In 1999 we also incorporated and formed an intra company to market our products as Chieftain Brand Meats.

Another reason for our remodeling was to make it easier to comply with HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Program) mandated by the Federal government to hel pinsure food safety. The opportunity to produce tasty snacks, hams, bacon, sausages, fresh steaks, chops, and ground beef is secondary to sanitation and food safety, and a superior product is the result.

As you can tell from our logo, we are located on the Kansas and Oklahoma border, one half mile inside the Kansas line next to what was formerly known as the Cherokee Strip or outlet. This was also known as the Oklahoma Indian Territory before Oklahoma became a state and Kiowa was a launching point for the Great Land Run of 1893.

We also produce a variety of venison products, including summer sausage, smoked sausage, hotlinks, snack sticks and jerky. Although we are unable to process deer carcasses, several thousand pounds of boneless deer is brought to our plant by hunters and is processed into the above products quickly and safely. We take the same care and use the same recipes and quality spices as we use to produce our Chieftain Brand Meats products.
